Blame “Black” Culture! Blame the Chavs!

As the clean-up operation winds down, post rioting across my cities in England, the aftermath has left many people across “Middle England” wondering why “these people” did what they did. Many people have called the violence mindless, outrageous, shocking, horrific, and every other possible synonym in the Collins English Dictionary. Others have started to apportion blame, and point fingers. Ex-Berlusconi minister defends the Norwegian killer

One of Silvio Berlusconi’s former ministers has defended the thinking of the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik.

Interviewed on a popular radio show, Francesco Speroni, a leading member of the Northern League, the junior partner in Berlusconi’s conservative coalition, said: “Breivik’s ideas are in defence of western civilisation.”

Speroni spoke as other right-wingers around Europe, including leading officials of his own party, distanced themselves from the massacre on Utoya and the ideology that inspired it. Read more >>>

Red-faced all over – The Met has a long way to go to clear its name

MORE lurid developments in the phone-hacking scandal at the News of the World (NotW), Britain’s best-selling Sunday paper, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News International. Two journalists were arrested on April 5th on suspicion of conspiring to intercept mobile-phone messages; both Neville Thurlbeck, the paper’s chief reporter, and Ian Edmondson, an assistant editor sacked in January, deny wrongdoing and were released on bail. Theirs are the first arrests since Scotland Yard launched a new investigation into the matter in January. Its initial probe in 2006 led only to the brief imprisonment of one “rogue” reporter and a private investigator. Read more >>>

Rape and murder in Uttar Pradesh

A spate of exceptionally brutal rapes in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh has shocked India. Many of the victims were young girls. The BBC’s Geeta Pandey reports from Lucknow.

For Sarika, 16, it was like any other day when she went out to the fields for her evening ablutions with her friend Chhaya.

It was a cold February evening and it was pitch dark. “I was feeling a little scared so I wanted to get back quickly,” she tells me.

On the way back, she says, she was attacked by Shivam and three other men from the village.
